Clare Moody today demanded that the government take action to ensure a viable future for steel on Teesside and use everything in its power to help the workers affected - there can be no more excuses for inaction. Up to 6,000 workers could be affected if the plant is shut down.
“History is repeating itself with this Government and it’s refusal to even acknowledge that there are European Union funds available to help its citizens.
The European Globalisation Adjustment Fund (EGF) provides support to people losing their jobs as a result of major changes in world trade patterns due to globalisation. Even though the workers at SSI are powerless against the global crash in the price of steel this Tory Government is refusing to use a fund designed to help in precisely these situations.
This will sound all too familiar to the people of the Somerset Levels who had their suffering extended due to the Government repeatedly rejecting calls to draw on funds from the European Union.
This week we have seen George Osbourne and the Tories try to position themselves as the party of the workers. Yet, with the impending disaster with Tax Credits and its refusal to save SSI and its workers, their actions speak louder than their words.”
