Clare Moody MEP for Devon visited Barnstaple to meet shoppers and shopworkers in the Tesco store in the town with Labour candidate, Mark Cann. Clare and Mark were supporting the Usdaw 'Keep your cool, respect shopworkers' campaign. They heard from one of the USDAW stewards, Val Main, about examples of verbal abuse that store assistants should not have to tolerate.

After the visit, Clare said 'I was pleased to support this campaign. It is completely unacceptable that workers should face abuse or even, in some instances, physical assault when they are just doing their job. It is important to raise awareness of these issues.'

Usdaw’s Freedom From Fear Campaign seeks to prevent violence, threats and abuse against workers in stores and betting shops. The union is highlighting these important issues and are keen that politicians recognise the need for there to be a change in the law to give shopworkers better protection from assault.
